Discover the Northern Neck National Heritage Area, a nationally recognized region where natural beauty, cultural richness, and historic significance converge.
Designated by Congress in 2022, this area spans the picturesque land between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, encompassing five counties steeped in history. From being the birthplace of Presidents Washington, Madison, and Monroe to its vibrant African American and Native American narratives, the Northern Neck invites exploration through stories, sites, and experiences that celebrate its diverse and enduring legacy.

National Heritage Area
On December 22, 2022, the United States Congress passed bipartisan legislation, introduced by Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) and U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA), officially designating the Northern Neck as a National Heritage Area (NHA). Spanning the land between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers across the counties of King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland, this recognition highlights the Northern Neck’s nationally significant natural, cultural, and historic resources. NHAs are unique landscapes where history and heritage come together to tell the stories of our nation.
The Northern Neck, often called the “Cradle of Democracy,” retains its rural charm, boasting historic homes, churches, forests, and miles of scenic waterfront. As the birthplace of Presidents George Washington, James Madison, and James Monroe, and home to Declaration of Independence signers Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, its designation as an NHA underscores its importance to the American story.
The Northern Neck Hidden History Trail (NNHHT) proudly supports the NHA designation, showcasing the region’s diverse heritage through the stories of African Americans, Native Americans, and other underrepresented voices. By offering a 360-degree sensory experience, including digital resources, self-guided tour apps, historic markers, and even tasting stations featuring the foods of its many cultures, the trail brings history to life from the pre-colonial era to the present. Together, these efforts aim to educate, inspire, and create lasting memories for visitors of all ages.
